Some people in Shelburne County are upset that the province has approved a clear cut on 260 hectares of forested crown land. When I came to college last year I became very involved with the campus Womens’ Center. Through the WC, I became aware of and joined the Bod Squad, which is a student led group that formed two years ago on our campus in order to promote healthy body image, eating disorder awareness, and good old lovin’ yourself for who you are. It’s like the editorial I read in a fairly right wing British paper the other week on how offering benefits to single mothers has caused women to leave their partners for an extra sixty quid a week and filled the world with criminals. Do these people actually think that money is the only driving force in a mother’s life? Now that I’ve read what people are posting about what is, and isn’t, being taught in sex ed, on the one hand I’m glad there are other great resources for students to get information (like this site!), but I worry about the impact of abstinence only on students who lack access to the web and/or lack ability to travel to a clinic like Planned Parenthood. What a school can and can’t do as far as a curriculum is concerned is actually mandated by the state. You’ll likely find that while a state’s standards may no go along with abstinence only programs, there isn’t usually strict guidelines as per how far a curriculum must go (Where health and sexual education is concerned at least.
